(Although I do not really believe God killed all the people on the earth and saved only one family!) God tells Noah to bring into the ark all the opposites: the wild and the domestic, the crawling and the flying, the clean and the unclean, the male and the female of each animal (Genesis 7:2-15).<\/p>\n<p>Then God does a most amazing thing. God locks them together inside the ark (Genesis 7:16). Check it out.<\/p>\n<p>Most people never note that God actually closed them in! God puts all the natural animosities, all the opposites together, and holds them in one place. I used to think it was about balancing all the opposites within me, but slowly I have learned that it is actually \u201cholding\u201d things in their seemingly unreconciled state that widens and deepens the soul. We must allow things to be only partly resolved, without perfect closure or explanation. Christians have not been taught how to live in hope. The ego always wants to settle the dust quickly and have answers right now. But Paul rightly says, \u201cIn hope we are saved, yet hope is not hope if its object is seen\u201d (Romans 8:24). The virtue of hope widens and deepens our foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Noah\u2019s ark is not meant to be a cute children\u2019s story; it is a mature metaphor for the People of God on the waves of time, carrying the contradictions, the opposites, the tensions, and the paradoxes of humanity\u2014preserving and protecting diversity inside of a safe unity created by God. (Thinking of it merely as punishing \u201cbad\u201d people only appeals to our lowest instincts and puts us back into meritocracy.) It is no accident that animals are deemed worth saving and that the covenant YHWH proclaims after the flood is \u201cwith every living creature,\u201d not just humans as we presume. (Read Genesis 9:10, 13, 15, where it is said three times!) This is no small point, although it has been largely ignored.<\/p>\n<p>God\u2019s gathering of contraries is, in fact, the very school of salvation, the school of love. That\u2019s where growth happens: in honest community and committed relationships. Love is learned in the encounter with \u201cotherness\u201d as both Martin Buber and Emmanuel Levinas taught. Not coincidentally, they both were Jewish philosophers whose worldview was formed by the Hebrew scriptures.<\/p>\n<p>Forgiveness becomes central to Jesus\u2019 teaching, because to receive reality is always to \u201cbear it,\u201d to bear with reality for not meeting all of our needs. To accept reality is to forgive reality for being what it is, almost day by day and sometimes even hour by hour. Such a practice creates patient and humble people.<\/p>\n<p>Forgiveness reveals three goodnesses simultaneously. When we forgive, we choose the goodness of the other over their faults, we experience God\u2019s goodness flowing through ourselves, and we also experience our own capacity for goodness in a way that almost surprises us. We are finally in touch with a much Higher Power, and we slowly learn how to draw upon this Infinite Source.<\/p>\n<p>Gateway to Silence:<br \/>\nCreate in me a clean heart. \u2014Psalm 51:10<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Usefulness or Relationship?<\/strong> (Oswald Chambers)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven. \u2014Luke 10:20<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus Christ is saying here, \u201cDon\u2019t rejoice in your successful service for Me, but rejoice because of your right relationship with Me.\u201d The trap you may fall into in Christian work is to rejoice in successful service\u2014 rejoicing in the fact that God has used you. Yet you will never be able to measure fully what God will do through you if you do not have a right-standing relationship with Jesus Christ. If you keep your relationship right with Him, then regardless of your circumstances or whoever you encounter each day, He will continue to pour \u201crivers of living water\u201d through you (John 7:38). And it is actually by His mercy that He does not let you know it. Once you have the right relationship with God through salvation and sanctification, remember that whatever your circumstances may be, you have been placed in them by God. And God uses the reaction of your life to your circumstances to fulfill His purpose, as long as you continue to \u201cwalk in the light as He is in the light\u201d (1 John 1:7).<\/p>\n<p>Our tendency today is to put the emphasis on service. Beware of the people who make their request for help on the basis of someone\u2019s usefulness. If you make usefulness the test, then Jesus Christ was the greatest failure who ever lived. For the saint, direction and guidance come from God Himself, not some measure of that saint\u2019s usefulness. It is the work that God does through us that counts, not what we do for Him. All that our Lord gives His attention to in a person\u2019s life is that person\u2019s relationship with God\u2014 something of great value to His Father.
