Julian of Norwich<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oneing<\/strong>\nTuesday, \u202fMay 12, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>The\nplace which Jesus takes in our soul he will nevermore vacate, for in us is his\nhome of homes, and it is the greatest delight for him to dwell there. . . . And\nthe soul who contemplates this is made like [the one] who is contemplated.<\/em> \u2014Julian of Norwich<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>On that day, you\nwill know that you are in me and I am in you.<\/em> \u2014John 14:20<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\nday\u201d promised in John\u2019s Gospel has been a long time in coming, yet it has been\nthe enduring message of every great religion in history. It <em>is<\/em> the Perennial Tradition. Divine and thus universal\nunion is still the core message and promise\u2014the whole goal and the entire point\nof all religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lady\nJulian of Norwich uses the idea of \u201coneing\u201d to describe divine union. In\nchapter 53 of <em>Revelations of\nDivine Love<\/em>, she writes,\n\u201cThis beloved soul was preciously knitted to God in its making, by a knot so\nsubtle and so mighty that it is oned in God. In this oneing, it is made\nendlessly holy. Furthermore, God wants us to know that all the souls which will\nbe saved in heaven without end are knit in this knot, and oned in this oneing,\nand made holy in this holiness.\u201d [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julian\nobserves, \u201cIf I pay special attention to myself, I am nothing at all; but in\ngeneral, I am, I hope, in the unity of love . . . for it is in this oneing that\nthe life of all people consists\u201d. . . . [2] She reflects: \u201cThe love of God\ncreates in us such a oneing that when it is truly seen, no person can separate\nthemselves from another.\u201d [3] Finally, let us hear Julian in her own Middle\nEnglish words, speaking of divine and human unity: \u201cFor in the sighte of God\nalle man is one man, and one man is alle man.\u201d[4]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nis not some 21st-century leap of logic. This is not pantheism or mere \u201cNew Age\u201d\noptimism. This is the whole point! Radical union is the recurring experience of\nthe saints and mystics of all religions. We do not have to discover or prove\nit; we only have to retrieve what has been re-discovered\u2014and enjoyed, again and\nagain\u2014by those who desire and seek God and love. When you think you have\n\u201cdiscovered\u201d it, you will be just like Jacob \u201cwhen he awoke from his sleep\u201d and\nshouted, \u201cYou were here all the time, and I never knew it!\u201d (Genesis 28:16).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As John states in his first Letter, \u201cI do not write to you because you do\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0know the truth, I am writing to you here because\u00a0<em>you know it already<\/em>\u201d! (1 John 2:21; my emphasis). Like John, I can only convince you of spiritual things because your soul already knows what is true, and that is why I believe and trust Julian\u2019s showings, too.
