Order, Disorder, Reorder:\nPart Three<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My\nStory, Our Story, THE Story<\/strong>\nFriday, \u202fAugust 28, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Only the whole self is ever ready for the whole God, so <em>Reorder<\/em> always involves\nmoving beyond the dualistic mind toward a more spacious, contemplative knowing.\nIn fact, if we are going to rebuild society, we first need to be rebuilt\nourselves. A healthy psyche lives within at least three levels of meaning. We\nmight imagine three domes, or containers. The first and smallest dome is called\n<em>My Story<\/em>, the second larger dome is <em>Our Story<\/em>, and the third and largest dome is <em>The Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nthe first dome is my private life: those issues that make me special, inferior\nor superior, right or wrong, depending on how \u201cI\u201d see it. \u201cI\u201d and my feelings\nand opinions are the reference points for everything. Jesus teaches that we\nmust let go of exactly this, and yet this is the very tiny and false self that\ncontemporary people take as normative, and even sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nnext realm of meaning is about Us. <em>Our\nStory<\/em> is the dome of our group, our community, our\ncountry, our church\u2014perhaps our nationality or ethnic group. These groups are\nthe necessary training grounds for belonging, attaching, trusting, and loving.\nUnfortunately, some folks just spend their lives defending the boundaries and\n\u201cglory\u201d of their group. Group egocentricity is even more dangerous than\npersonal egocentricity. It looks like greatness when it is often no more than\ndisguised egotism. Loyalties at this level have driven most of human\nhistory\u2014and most wars\u2014up to now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nthird and largest dome of meaning is <em>THE\nStory<\/em>, the realm of\nuniversal meaning and the patterns that are always true in every culture. This\nlevel assures and insures the other two. It holds them together in sacred\nmeaning. In fact, we could say that the greater the opposites we can hold together,\nthe greater soul we usually have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biblical\nreligion, at its best, honors and combines all three levels: personal journey\nas raw material, communal identity as school and training ground, and an\nencounter with true transcendence as the integration and gathering place for\nall the parts together. True transcendence frees us from the tyranny of <em>I Am<\/em> and the idolatry\nof <em>We Are<\/em>. Still, when all three are\ntaken seriously, as the Bible does very well, we have a full life\u2014fully human\nand fully divine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The person who\nlives most of their life grounded within <em>THE Story<\/em> is the mystic, the\nprophet, the universal human, the saint, the whole one. These are the people\nwho look out at the smaller picture with eyes as wide as saucers because they\nobserve from the utterly big picture\u2014with love.
