A prisoner at Auschwitz\nconcentration camp, he chose to save the life of another inmate by offering his\nown. One of the eyewitnesses to this selfless exchange, a doctor, recounts: <\/em>\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nIt happened that at the end of July or the\nbeginning of August, a prisoner escaped from the garden detail, I believe. This\nescapee not having been found, the camp authorities decided to choose ten\nprisoners from barrack 2. During roll call, I was separated from the Servant of\nGod [as Kolbe was called during the process for canonization] by three or four\npersons. [The commander] chose ten prisoners, among them Francis Gajowniczek [1901\u20121995]. When this man learned what was to\nhappen to him, he began to cry with pain and despair that he had a wife and\nchildren, that he wanted to see them again, and that he was going to die.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nAt that point, Father Maximilian Kolbe stepped\nout of line, lifted his cap, and declared to [the commander], pointing to\nGajowniczek, that he wanted to sacrifice himself for that prisoner, as he had\nno wife and children. [The commander] asked him his profession. He replied: \u201cI\nam a Catholic priest.\u201d There followed a moment while the SS showed a certain\nsurprise. Then [the commander] ordered Gajowniczek to get back in line and the\nServant of God to take his place among those condemned to the bunker.[1]\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<em>In an Easter season 2021 sermon, contemplative\npriest and co-founder of the Center for Spiritual Imagination, Adam Bucko,\nreflected on Kolbe\u2019s story and the meaning of the Gospel today: <\/em>\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nGrowing up in Poland, I was shaped by many\nstories of World War II that I heard over and over again as a kid. . . . I\nbelieve these stories [of Kolbe and others] offer us a way out. A way out of\nthe logic that our world operates on. A logic that lives inside of us and\ngoverns so many of our basic drives. A logic that led to the war these stories\ndescribed and, also, in some ways, is responsible for many of the heartbreaking\nthings we are witnessing today. Personal things and societal things.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThis logic can best be described by what\nphilosopher Hegel [1770\u20131831] called the \u201cmaster-slave dialectic.\u201d Applied to\nour societal history, it tells us that, when left to ourselves, we often\norganize our lives according to the principle of domination. . . .\n\nIn the gospel [on\nMaundy Thursday] we are shown that real power is not the power of domination\nbut rather the power of love. And that looking at life from the vantage point\nof love, we see that our being and our joy increase to an extent that we give\nit away. We see that the real significance of our lives grows the more we are\nwilling to move beyond seeing others as threats and instead choose to delight\n\u201cin their energy . . . [and] give away some of our own life to help resource\ntheir lives.\u201d\n\n_______________________________________________\n\nI, THE CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE, am with you and for you. What more could you need? When you feel some lack, it is because you are not connecting with Me at a deep level. I offer abundant Life; your part is to trust Me, refusing to worry about anything. It is not so much adverse events that make you anxious as it is your thoughts about those events. Your mind engages in efforts to take control of a situation, to bring about the result you desire. Your thoughts close in on the problem like ravenous wolves. <strong>Determined to make things go your way,<\/strong> you forget that I am in charge of your life.<strong> The only remedy is to switch your focus from the problem to My Presence.<\/strong> Stop all your striving, and watch to see what I will do.
