{"id":20466,"date":"2021-09-08T11:30:07","date_gmt":"2021-09-08T15:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/co2mannatoday.com\/?p=20466"},"modified":"2021-09-08T11:35:34","modified_gmt":"2021-09-08T15:35:34","slug":"collective-responsibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/co2mannatoday.com\/?p=20466","title":{"rendered":"Collective Responsibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lv603l4MbuU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In my talks on Paul, I tried to show how Paul teaches that we are both saints and sinners on a corporate level\u2014and at the same time. Our holiness lies in participating in the wholeness of the Body of Christ. As I said in my <em>Great Themes of Paul<\/em> talks:<\/p>\n<p>Individually and personally, our private egos\u2014which we\u2019ve all been trained to take absolutely seriously\u2014are too small and temporary to really believe Paul\u2019s words about us. He says: \u201cYou are God\u2019s work of art\u201d (Ephesians 2:10), \u201cYou are God\u2019s temple\u201d (1 Corinthians 3:16), \u201cYou are the sweet aroma of Christ\u201d (2 Corinthians 2:15), \u201cYou are saints\u201d (Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:2). What is he talking about? On our own, we have so much evidence to the contrary. We simply can\u2019t bear that much goodness. If we hear his teaching on an individual moral level, we\u2019ll never believe it\u2014nor should we. We almost have to dismiss it as pious nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>On the other, more negative side, Paul says, \u201cYou\u2019re all sinners\u201d (Romans 3:23), \u201cYou\u2019re slaves to the flesh\u201d (Romans 6:20), and \u201cYour sinful passions bring death,\u201d (Romans 7:5). We stand guilty and shame-based under these words if we hear them as individuals. Or we rebel against Paul\u2019s words, thinking, \u201cI\u2019m not going to sit here and be told I\u2019m terrible and unworthy.\u201d Of course, the little psyche, the little ego, is just too little to carry this great big theater piece of drama and shame on its own.<\/p>\n<p>Paul knew, I believe, that these proclamations were far too huge to be carried by the individual person. He is trying to find words and categories, searching for ever-new language to describe the corporate, historical, larger-than-life body and participative phenomenon we\u2019re all caught up in, which he calls \u201cthe Body of Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, we now live in an age where we have a language to describe this. The evidence from science is that the foundational reality of this world is consciousness or what we call spirit, not materiality.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot easily be told that we, on our own, are evil, bad, sinful, or responsible. We\u2019ll block it or deny it. But we cannot deny that we are a part of a species that has killed one hundred million people in wars within the last century. We don\u2019t find ourselves resisting that quite as much because, somehow, we\u2019re carrying this together. There is a level of acceptance as we move toward social accountability and social responsibility. We\u2019re all participating in the evil of unjust systems and it\u2019s at that level that we can and must carry the pain and hear that we are sinners. More positively, we must carry what seems like the complete opposite, that we are saints. Both are true at the same time, and believe it or not, \u201cin Christ\u201d they don\u2019t cancel one another out! They include one another.<\/p>\n<p>ACCEPT EACH DAY exactly as it comes to you. By that, I mean not only the circumstances of your day but also the condition of your body. Your assignment is to trust Me absolutely, resting in My sovereignty and faithfulness. On some days, your circumstances and your physical condition feel out of balance: The demands on you seem far greater than your strength. Days like that present a choice between two alternatives\u2014giving up or relying on Me. Even if you wrongly choose the first alternative, I will not reject you. You can turn to Me at any point, and I will help you crawl out of the mire of discouragement. I will infuse My strength into you moment by moment, giving you all that you need for this day. Trust Me by relying on My empowering Presence.<\/p>\n<p>PSALM 42:5; <strong>Why are you downcast<\/strong>, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him for the salvation of His presence.
