As a young boy,\nBuber lived with his grandparents in Lemberg, present day Lviv, Ukraine. He was\nimpacted by his grandfather\u2019s Hasidic faith and went on to dedicate much of his\nscholarly life to sharing the legends, sayings, and stories of Hasidism. Much\nlike the sayings of the Christian desert fathers and mothers, Hasidic short\nsayings contain wisdom beyond their words. We share several from Martin Buber\u2019s\nwork and encourage you to read them slowly, several times, to experience their\nprayerful wisdom.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This first saying is reminiscent of Thomas Merton\u2019s words, \u201c<strong>For me to be a saint means to be myself.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><strong>&nbsp;[1] <\/strong><em><strong>We discover our true identity in God when we no longer pretend to be anything other than who we are:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Zusya . . . said, a short while before his death: \u2018<strong>In the world to come I shall not be asked: \u201cWhy were you not Moses?\u201d I shall be asked: \u201cWhy were you not Zusya?\u201d\u2019 [2]&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The following saying\ncaptures the Hasidic emphasis that, as the biblical Jacob discovered, \u201cthis\nplace is the gate of heaven\u201d (Genesis 28:17):&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is said of a certain Talmudic master that the paths of heaven were as bright to him as the streets of his native town. <strong>Hasidism inverts the order: It is a greater thing if the streets of a person\u2019s native town are as bright to them as the paths of heaven. For it is here, where we stand, that we should try to make shine the light of the hidden divine life. <\/strong>[3]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The final saying reminds us that, while God\u2019s presence is found in all reality, it takes an inner willingness to encounter it:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Where is the dwelling of God?\u2019\u202f&nbsp;<br>\n<br>\nThis is the question with which the Rabbi of Kotzk surprised a number of learned\nmen who happened to be visiting him.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They laughed at him: \u2018What a thing to ask! Is not the\nwhole world full of [God\u2019s] glory?\u2019\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then he answered his own question:\u202f\u202f&nbsp; <strong>\u2018God dwells wherever man lets him in. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Young (abbreviated)&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be aware of My Presence with you. You cannot dread a day that is vibrant with My presence.
