{"id":24867,"date":"2025-03-06T10:35:19","date_gmt":"2025-03-06T15:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/co2mannatoday.com\/?p=24867"},"modified":"2025-03-06T10:35:19","modified_gmt":"2025-03-06T15:35:19","slug":"the-tears-of-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/co2mannatoday.com\/?p=24867","title":{"rendered":"The Tears of Things"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Citizen Way - I Will (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k_bHd2-QhuQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lamenting All That\u2019s Lost<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Thursday, March 6, 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Artist and organizer Stephen Pavey finds parallels between Israel during the prophet Amos\u2019 time (8th century BCE) and the United States today:<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Amos\u2019s time, the Northern Kingdom of Israel had extended its lands and increased its influence over trade routes, which brought great economic prosperity to the nation. <strong>God\u2019s vision of society\u2014in which wealth is shared and the needs of every member of society are met\u2014was fracturing because of rampant materialism, greed, corruption, and bribery.<\/strong> Like we see in the United States, <strong>the gap between the wealthy few and the masses of poor and oppressed had grown wide.<\/strong> While moral standards were collapsing in the public sphere, religious practices and worship of God remained very important in society.\u2026\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In chapter 5, Amos begins a lament, or cry of sorrow, against this way of life: \u201cThere will be wailing in all the streets\u201d (5:16). In our own day, the prophet Callie Greer, who lives in Selma, Alabama, and organizes with the Poor People\u2019s Campaign, tells the nation, \u201cYou must let me wail.\u201d In February 2020, she testified to her pain and oppression at a public gathering in Selma: years earlier, her daughter had died in her arms due to poverty and lack of health care. Callie cried out, \u201cYou must let me wail for the children I\u2019ve lost to poverty and will never get back, wail for all the children we mothers have lost. <strong>I won\u2019t waste my pain. I hope I make you feel uncomfortable. I hope I make you feel angry. I\u2019m wailing because my babies are no more.\u201d\u00a0[1]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Richard Rohr reflects on Jesus\u2019 blessing for those who weep:&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus did not intend his statement \u201cBlessed are those who weep\u201d (Luke 6:21) to be sentimentalized or remain unnoticed. Hard-heartedness, or what Zechariah and other prophets called \u201chearts of flint,\u201d prevented the people from hearing the law and the words that YHWH had sent by the Spirit. <strong>A heart of stone cannot recognize the empires it builds and the empires it worships. Lamentation does. It moves us through anger and sadness, empowering us to truly hear and respond to the always-tragic now.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prophet Ezekiel says: \u201cI shall give you a new heart, and put a new spirit in you; <strong>I shall remove the heart of stone from your bodies and give you a heart of flesh instead. I shall put my spirit in you\u2026. You shall be my people and I will be your God\u201d (Ezekiel 36:26\u201328). This is the organ transplant that we all long for, the interior religiosity that all spirituality seeks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, language about God having emotions is always a projection of our human emotions onto God. But if we can understand that <strong>God weeps over the human situation\u2014as Jesus wept over Jerusalem, again over Lazarus\u2019 death, and in Gethsemane\u2014we know it\u2019s a universal truth. God doesn\u2019t hate anything God created; God pities it in the true meaning of the word\u00a0<em>pity<\/em>, which is to have compassion for the suffering of everything. [2]\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>_________________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lamenting but Not Losing Hope<\/strong>&#8230;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scripture: Lamentations 3:22-23<\/strong><br><em>&#8220;Because of the Lord\u2019s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Devotional Thought<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Life brings seasons of deep sorrow, disappointment, and grief. The Bible does not shy away from this reality. In fact, an entire book\u2014Lamentations\u2014is devoted to expressing sorrow. The psalmists also pour out their hearts to God in lament, and even Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lament is not a lack of faith\u2014it is an expression of it.<\/strong> <strong>When we cry out to God, we are acknowledging His sovereignty and inviting Him into our pain. But biblical lament does not end in despair; it leads us back to hope.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeremiah, the author of Lamentations, describes the destruction of Jerusalem in agonizing detail. Yet, in the midst of his sorrow, he remembers the faithfulness of God: <em>\u201cThe steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No matter how dark our circumstances, God&#8217;s mercies are new every morning. Our weeping may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5). Even when we don&#8217;t see the way forward, we can trust that God is working all things for good (Romans 8:28).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reflection Questions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>What sorrow or disappointment are you carrying today?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have you brought your lament to God in prayer?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can you remind yourself of God\u2019s faithfulness in this season?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prayer<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Father, I bring my sorrow before You. I don\u2019t understand everything that is happening, but I trust in Your faithfulness. Thank You for Your mercy that never runs dry. Help me to hold on to hope even in the midst of pain. Renew my strength and remind me that You are with me.
