Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. recounts the violent threats that grew in response to his work for justice:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost immediately after the protest [in Montgomery, Alabama] started we had begun to receive threatening telephone calls and letters. They increased as time went on. By the middle of January, they had risen to thirty and forty a day\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the weeks passed, I began to see that many of the threats were in earnest. Soon I felt myself faltering and growing in fear\u2026. One night at a mass meeting, I found myself saying, \u201cIf one day you find me sprawled out dead, I do not want you to retaliate with a single act of violence. I urge you to continue protesting with the same dignity and discipline you have shown so far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>After receiving a threatening late-night phone call, King\u2019s resolve was renewed through prayer and an experience of God\u2019s presence and call:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seemed that all of my fears had come down on me at once. I had reached the saturation point\u2026. I was ready to give up\u2026. I tried to think of a way to move out of the picture without appearing a coward\u2026. And I got to the point that I couldn\u2019t take it any longer\u2026. With my head in my hands, I bowed over the kitchen table and prayed aloud. The words I spoke to God that midnight are still vivid in my memory: \u201cLord, I\u2019m down here trying to do what\u2019s right. I think I\u2019m right. I am here taking a stand for what I believe is right. But Lord, I must confess that I\u2019m weak now, I\u2019m faltering. I\u2019m losing my courage. Now, I am afraid. And I can\u2019t let the people see me like this because if they see me weak and losing my courage, they will begin to get weak. The people are looking to me for leadership, and if I stand before them without strength and courage, they too will falter. I am at the end of my powers. I have nothing left. I\u2019ve come to the point where I can\u2019t face it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It seemed as though I could hear the quiet assurance of an inner voice saying: <\/strong>\u201cMartin Luther, stand up for righteousness. Stand up for justice. Stand up for truth. And lo, I will be with you. Even until the end of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tell you I\u2019ve seen the lightning flash. I\u2019ve heard the thunder roar. I\u2019ve felt sin breakers dashing trying to conquer my soul. But <strong>I heard the voice of Jesus saying still to fight on. He promised never to leave me <\/strong>alone. At that moment I experienced the presence<strong> of the Divine as I had never experienced Him before. Almost at once my fears began to go. My uncertainty disappeared. I was ready to face an<\/strong>ything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>___________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Calling: January 22<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>STRIVE TO TRUST ME in more and more areas of your life. Anything that tends to make you anxious is a growth opportunity. <strong>Instead of running away from these challenges, embrace them,<\/strong> eager to gain all the blessings I have hidden in the difficulties. If you believe that I am sovereign over every aspect of your life, it is possible to trust Me in all situations. <strong>Don&#8217;t waste energy regretting the way things are or thinking<\/strong> <strong>about what might have been. Start at the present moment&#8211;accepting things exactly as they<\/strong> <strong>are&#8211;and search for My way in the midst of those circumstances.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Trust is like a staff you can lean on, as you journey uphill with Me. If you are trusting in Me consistently, the staff will bear as much of your weight as needed.
