Richard Rohr writes about why this ancient tradition still matters: \u201c<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">It is a unique window into how Jesus was first understood, before the church became an imperial, highly organized, competitive religion.<\/span><\/strong>\u201d [2]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Practicing \u201cletting go\u201d in contemplation allowed the desert mystics\u2014and allows us\u2014to access our spiritual selves<\/em>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A core principle of the desert\u2014and something worth considering while cultivating our own inner freedom\u2014was the notion of&nbsp;<em>apatheia.&nbsp;<\/em>Author Laura Swan explains: \u201cApatheia is purity of heart. The&nbsp;<em>ammas<\/em>&nbsp;[desert mothers] teach us <strong>to intentionally let go of all that keeps us from the single-minded pursuit of God: feelings and thoughts that bind us, cravings and addictions that diminish our sense of worth, and attachments to self-imposed perfectionism.<\/strong> Apatheia is nourished by simplicity grounded in abundance of the soul.\u201d [3]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such letting go <strong>can feel like emptiness. It can feel disorienting, crazy, nonlinear\u2014terrifying even<\/strong>\u2014as if we are like the desert fathers and mothers, leaving behind the comforts of the city for the vast emptiness of the desert. This powerful metaphor<strong> invites the disruption of our own unhealthy patterns, as we interrupt the ways that we are being controlled (sometimes unconsciously) by the ways of the world and our false selves to make room for something deeper to be born within us<\/strong>: For aspects of the true self to be discovered. <strong>For our awareness of the divine within us to grow. For love to expand. For the same spiritual truths that arose in the desert centuries before to dwell and deepen within our souls.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>==============<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/@leonardsweet\">Leonard Sweet<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/@leonardsweet\/note\/c-205506733\">Jan 26<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a difference between \u201cJesus, I want you to become part of my story\u201d and \u201cJesus, I want to become part of your story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus doesn\u2019t come to improve your storyline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus comes to make you a line in His eternal Story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Jesus becomes part of your story, He\u2019s a character.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you become part of His story, He\u2019s Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy story + Jesus\u201d is self-help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>============<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For individual contemplation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Where in your life are you holding on to your own story \u2014 trying to get Jesus to improve your chapter \u2014 rather than releasing it into His?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For group discussion:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The desert mystics left literal cities for literal deserts. What would it look like for you to practice that kind of departure right now \u2014 not as escape, but as the kind of letting go that makes room for something deeper?
