Coalesce!<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Tuesday, October 17, 2017<\/strong><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ut0ENzQcjrM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<em>Guest writer and CAC faculty member Cynthia Bourgeault continues reflecting on the Christian mystic Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The second hopeful resource that Teilhard brings to our unsettled times is his unshakable conviction that evolutionary progress will unfold its ultimate triumph in the realm of the <em>personal<\/em>. Our postmodern temperament has a well-ingrained tendency to regard the world through a filter of <em>distrus<\/em>t, in which we inevitably view evolution as \u201crandom,\u201d disconnected, and certainly <em>impersonal.<\/em> However, Teilhard encourages us to see our planetary home as a coherent and increasingly compassionate whole, steadily plying its way along an irreversible evolutionary trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>In the big picture, there is nothing to suggest that evolution has gone off track. But there is plenty to suggest that we are entering a critical new phase in which some old-order survival strategies (read: the \u201cfight or flight\u201d mechanisms that have ruled our survival thus far) are giving way to a new and more intentional sense of mutual interdependence. The transition appears to already be underway. To continue this turning, it\u2019s crucial that we humans make the evolutionary shift from \u201cindividuals\u201d to \u201cpersons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the difference?<\/p>\n<p>We typically use these terms interchangeably, but for Teilhard they denote distinctly different, progressive evolutionary stages. An <em>individual <\/em>lives as an autonomous unit, subject to the old-order laws of \u201csurvival of the fittest\u201d and planetary indifference. A <em>person<\/em> has come to understand themselves as belonging to greater relational field. They now sense their identity <em>from a sense of wholeness<\/em> in an entirely different order of coherence: a whole greater than the sum of its parts. In this greater whole <em>both unity and differentiation<\/em> are preserved; meanwhile the whole begins to be infused by a supremely personal tincture or essence. The universe is no longer random, but a system of relationships to which we all belong and are participating in!<\/p>\n<p>A cautionary note: for Teilhard, <em>oneness<\/em> does not equate simply to some sentimental proclamation of \u201cfellowship\u201d or \u201clet\u2019s all just get along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Teilhard this process of <em>becoming unified <\/em>is evident in the evolution of the smallest cell to the orbit of our very planet. In fact, says Teilhard, it\u2019s the very direction of how consciousness evolved in the first place! As more complex forms emerged in <em>unified units<\/em> on our planet, consciousness was able to emerge with it. From this we can gather that the future of spirituality will not be found in the \u201cenlightenment\u201d of a select number of <em>individuals<\/em>, but will arrive through us collectively as a new \u201cunit,\u201d in the emergence of what we might call the mystical body of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>The rising scent of our common humanity is already in the air, and as we consciously join hearts across the antiquated boundaries of the nationalities and denominations that once defined our identities, the blue biosphere of our planet Earth is being suffused with the gold and scarlet of our common human heart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gateway to Silence:<\/strong><br \/>\nFall fearless into Love.<\/p>\n<p>____________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Key of the Greater Work<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>By <a href=\"https:\/\/utmost.org\/oswald-chambers-bio\">Oswald Chambers<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/.col-12 --> <!-- \/.row --><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\u00a0<strong>\u2026I say to you, he who believes in Me,\u2026greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. \u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?version=31&amp;search=John+14%3A12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 14:12<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"row entry-meta\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<div id=\"key-verse-box\">\n<p>Prayer does not equip us for greater works\u2014 prayer is the greater work. Yet we think of prayer as some commonsense exercise of our higher powers that simply prepares us for God\u2019s work. In the teachings of Jesus Christ, prayer is the working of the miracle of redemption in me, which produces the miracle of redemption in others, through the power of God. The way fruit remains firm is through prayer, but remember that it is prayer based on the agony of Christ in redemption, not on my own agony. We must go to God as His child, because only a child gets his prayers answered; a \u201cwise\u201d man does not (see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+11:25\">Matthew 11:25<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Prayer is <em>the<\/em> battle, and it makes no difference where you are. However God may engineer your circumstances, your duty is to pray. Never allow yourself this thought, \u201cI am of no use where I am,\u201d because you certainly cannot be used where you have not yet been placed. Wherever God has placed you and whatever your circumstances, you should pray, continually offering up prayers to Him. And He promises, \u201cWhatever you ask in My name, that I will do\u2026\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+14:13\">John 14:13<\/a>). Yet we refuse to pray unless it thrills or excites us, which is the most intense form of spiritual selfishness. We must learn to work according to God\u2019s direction, and He says to <em>pray<\/em>. \u201cPray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+9:38\">Matthew 9:38<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing thrilling about a laboring person\u2019s work, but it is the laboring person who makes the ideas of the genius possible. And it is the laboring saint who makes the ideas of his Master possible. When you labor at prayer, from God\u2019s perspective there are always results.
