My friend and fellow Franciscan Jack Wintz wrote a book entitled Will I See My Dog in Heaven? In it he takes the scriptural, Christian, and Franciscan traditions to their logical conclusions: Yes, of course! As Franciscans, we studied the Scriptures and chanted Psalms that were filled with allusions to the natural world and animals. From the beginning of the Bible to the end, it is clear that a loving God includes all of creation in God\u2019s Kingdom.<br \/>\nIn the Genesis story, God\u2019s love, beauty, and goodness overflow into creation; and all creatures, including humans, are living peacefully in God\u2019s presence. Isaiah prophesies the \u201cpeaceable kingdom\u201d to come (11:1-9; 65:17-25), which is symbolized by animals living in peace. In Revelation, John hears \u201cevery creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, everything in the universe\u201d giving God \u201cblessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever\u201d (Revelation 5:13). Finally, John sees \u201ca new heaven and a new earth\u201d (21:1) and the Bible ends with a new garden, complete with \u201cthe river of life-giving water\u201d and \u201cthe tree of life\u201d (22:1-2).<br \/>\nGod shows authentic, primal concern for all animals by directing Noah to take a male and female of every species onto the ark to be saved (see Genesis 7:2-3). Apparently, animals matter and are worth \u201csaving.\u201d After the flood, God makes a covenant, not just with people but with all of creation (stated five times in 9:10-17). How did we miss that? Sadly, if we are self-centered, even if we say the Bible is the \u201cinerrant\u201d word of God, we will hear only what we want to hear! God\u2019s salvation\u2014and every biblical covenant\u2014is clearly a social, historical, and universal concept rather than the merely human and individualistic version of salvation that most of us were taught. This made Christianity into a largely ineffective religion. The notion of salvation became so guarded and so stingy it was finally not available to the vast majority of humans!<br \/>\nI encourage you to study Scripture for yourself. Note especially Daniel 3:57-82; Job 12: 7-10 and 38:4-39:30; and Psalms 104 and 148, all of which show forth the revelatory power of creation. As Wintz says, \u201cWe are a part of this Creation, not apart from it.\u201d [2] To love something is to mirror its inmost core and dignity, which we have also found within ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Gateway to Presence:<br \/>\nIf you want to go deeper with today\u2019s meditation, take note of what word or phrase stands out to you. Come back to that word or phrase throughout the day, being present to its impact and invitation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Source of Abundant Joy<\/strong><br \/>\nBy Oswald Chambers<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. \u2014Romans 8:37<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Paul was speaking here of the things that might seem likely to separate a saint from the love of God. But the remarkable thing is that nothing can come between the love of God and a saint. The things Paul mentioned in this passage can and do disrupt the close fellowship of our soul with God and separate our natural life from Him. But none of them is able to come between the love of God and the soul of a saint on the spiritual level. The underlying foundation of the Christian faith is the undeserved, limitless miracle of the love of God that was exhibited on the Cross of Calvary; a love that is not earned and can never be. Paul said this is the reason that \u201cin all these things we are more than conquerors.\u201d We are super-victors with a joy that comes from experiencing the very things which look as if they are going to overwhelm us.<br \/>\nHuge waves that would frighten an ordinary swimmer produce a tremendous thrill for the surfer who has ridden them. Let\u2019s apply that to our own circumstances. The things we try to avoid and fight against\u2014 tribulation, suffering, and persecution\u2014 are the very things that produce abundant joy in us. \u201cWe are more than conquerors through Him\u201d \u201cin all these things\u201d; not in spite of them, but in the midst of them. A saint doesn\u2019t know the joy of the Lord in spite of tribulation, but because of it. Paul said, \u201cI am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation\u201d (2 Corinthians 7:4).<br \/>\nThe undiminished radiance, which is the result of abundant joy, is not built on anything passing, but on the love of God that nothing can change. And the experiences of life, whether they are everyday events or terrifying ones, are powerless to \u201cseparate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord\u201d (Romans 8:39).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every Being Is of God&#8217;s Making Wednesday, March 7, 2018 If you would learn more, ask the cattle, Seek information from the birds of the air.
