Order, Disorder, Reorder:\nPart One<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nCosmic Order<\/strong>\nWednesday, \u202fAugust 12, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>Matter\nis the common, universal, tangible setting, infinitely shifting and varied, in\nwhich we live. . . . By matter we are nourished, lifted up, linked to\neverything else, invaded by life.<\/em> \u2014Teilhard de\nChardin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The physical\nstructure of the universe is love.<\/em> \u2014Teilhard de\nChardin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For Pierre\nTeilhard de Chardin (1881\u20131955), a French Jesuit priest who trained as a\npaleontologist and geologist, love is at the physical heart of the universe. He\nviewed love as the attraction of all things toward all things. We could say\nthat love is<\/em> the <em>universal<\/em> <em>ordering\nprinciple. In this passage from <\/em>Liberation and the Cosmos<em>, CAC faculty member Dr. Barbara Holmes imagines a\nconversation between Civil Rights lawyer and educator Barbara Jordan\n(1936\u20131996) and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall (1908\u20131993). It\ncaptures the essence of what is good and possible about Order\u2014in both the laws\nof cosmos and the land.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marshall:\nHow about this, Barbara? Suppose, just for argument\u2019s sake, that we consider\nthe law to be a reflection of the order of the cosmos? Although there is chaos\nand synchronicity, there is also the potential for creative genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan:\nI remember reading the work of Teilhard de Chardin, a Jesuit priest, mystic,\nand paleontologist who did a good deal of work on consciousness and the laws of\nthe universe. . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nlaws of nations give clues as to the state of mind of a populace, and sometimes\nthey provide a history of our processive movement toward our highest good. That\u2019s\nall of the science that I know. But from what I understand, there are laws of\nthe universe as well as laws of nation-states. Matter and spirit are\nintertwined so that the \u201cquanta of matter and spirit that once permeated the\nearly universe become fibers of matter influenced by gravity and threads of\nspirit drawn by love.\u201d [1] . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marshall:\nLet me say a few cosmological things. While our laws are in place to prevent,\nproscribe, and punish, the laws of the universe seem to be focused on\nconnection, attraction, and a cosmic holding mechanism. . . . Where was\nTeilhard when I needed him? The idea that we are connected to a future good,\nand moving toward something better, would have been a breath of fresh air . . .\n. Now that I am on this side of the continuum, I\u2019m certain that the trajectory\nof human life is toward mutuality and care of self and neighbor. [2]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I wish more of us understood and accepted the \u201claws of the universe,\u201d which include disruption, dynamism and evolution, instead of clinging so tightly to the \u201claw and order\u201d of church and country. Jesus himself indicated that \u201cheavenly\u201d and \u201chuman\u201d laws are not on equal footing. He refused to enforce or even bother with what he considered secondary issues like ritual laws, purity codes, and membership requirements.
