If we trust in our own abilities, instead of God’s, we produce consequences for which God will hold us responsible. When God through His sovereignty brings us into new situations, we should immediately make sure that our natural life submits to the spiritual, obeying the orders of the Spirit of God. Just because we have responded properly in the past is no guarantee that we will do so again. The response of the natural to the spiritual should be continuous conversion, but this is where we so often refuse to be obedient. No matter what our situation is, the Spirit of God remains unchanged and His salvation unaltered. But we must “put on the new man . . .” (Ephesians 4:24). God holds us accountable every time we refuse to convert ourselves, and He sees our refusal as willful disobedience. Our natural life must not rule— God must rule in us.

To refuse to be continuously converted puts a stumbling block in the growth of our spiritual life. There are areas of self-will in our lives where our pride pours contempt on the throne of God and says, “I won’t submit.” We deify our independence and self-will and call them by the wrong name. What God sees as stubborn weakness, we call strength. There are whole areas of our lives that have not yet been brought into submission, and this can only be done by this continuous conversion. Slowly but surely we can claim the whole territory for the Spirit of God.

_______________________________________________________

December 28, 2010

Journal Entry for Today-JDV

When I first read this devotional, my mind read Continual Conversation instead of Continual Conversion. And as I thought about it more, I became comfortable with this thought and the more expanded view that my conversion is in fact continual as a result of an ongoing and everlasting conversation with God. I am not sure I agree with Chambers that we are held accountable by God by often refusing to be continually converted; in fact I suspect that our refusals to be continually converted may in fact tell us why we need a sacrifice the magnitude of the Son of God. And I know that the sacrifice of Jesus is sufficient to settle all accounts with God. God no longer holds us accountable.

Our very nature requires a sacrifice the magnitude of Jesus and out of our understanding, appreciation and love we seek an honest, open, and very real Continual Conversation that results in our Continual Conversion.

And God says…”Jesus did all the work at the cross. He paid the price. He did not pay part of the price for your sin, unbelief and rebellion. His sacrifice covers it all; your past, present and future sin and rebellion. Your responsibility is to accept His sacrifice and to constantly agree that His sacrifice is sufficient. In constantly agreeing you live in harmony with Me and with one another. As John wrote…7But if we [really] are living and walking in the Light, as He [Himself] is in the Light, we have [true, unbroken] fellowship with (Him and ) one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses (removes) us from all sin and guilt [keeps us cleansed from sin in all its forms and manifestations].

There is no more work for you to do in your continual conversion.
