The Spiritual Search

August 24, 2010

What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? —Matthew 7:9

The illustration of prayer that our Lord used here is one of a good child who is asking for something good. We talk about prayer as if God hears us regardless of what our relationship is to Him (seeMatthew 5:45 ). Never say that it is not God’s will to give you what you ask. Don’t faint and give up, but find out the reason you have not received; increase the intensity of your search and examine the evidence. Is your relationship right with your spouse, your children, and your fellow students? Are you a “good child” in those relationships? Do you have to say to the Lord, “I have been irritable and cross, but I still want spiritual blessings”? You cannot receive and will have to do without them until you have the attitude of a “good child.”

We mistake defiance for devotion, arguing with God instead of surrendering. We refuse to look at the evidence that clearly indicates where we are wrong. Have I been asking God to give me money for something I want, while refusing to pay someone what I owe him? Have I been asking God for liberty while I am withholding it from someone who belongs to me? Have I refused to forgive someone, and have I been unkind to that person? Have I been living as God’s child among my relatives and friends? (see Matthew 7:12 ).

I am a child of God only by being born again, and as His child I am good only as I “walk in the light” ( 1 John 1:7 ). For most of us, prayer simply becomes some trivial religious expression, a matter of mystical and emotional fellowship with God. We are all good at producing spiritual fog that blinds our sight. But if we will search out and examine the evidence, we will see very clearly what is wrong— a friendship, an unpaid debt, or an improper attitude. There is no use praying unless we are living as children of God. Then Jesus says, regarding His children, “Everyone who asks receives . . .” ( Matthew 7:8 ).

Journal Entry for Today-JDV

Whenever I read Oswald or another Christian writer that talks about our “being good” It occurs to me that I am not good. I often do the wrong things, think the wrong thoughts, and even though I try as hard as I can, I still fall short, over and over. If I must “be good” in order to have God answer my prayers, I am afraid that I am in for a life of unanswered prayer and day to day lessons in patience.

Does God love me such that I must “be good” before my prayers are answered?

And God says…..”You must only receive Me and My sacrifice. I will do all the saving and changing. Simply acknowledge you are unable to accomplish what Jesus can and will as you give up trying to “be good”. You can and will never be good enough.

Jesus is good enough, let Him be your life, let Him lead your life, let Him love you. In this way you will always be the good son, not because of what you do but because of what Jesus did.

Prayer— Battle in “The Secret Place” 8-23-2010

Prayer— Battle in “The Secret Place”

August 23, 2010
When you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly —Matthew 6:6

Jesus did not say, “Dream about your Father who is in the secret place,” but He said, “. . . pray to your Father who is in the secret place. . . .” Prayer is an effort of the will. After we have entered our secret place and shut the door, the most difficult thing to do is to pray. We cannot seem to get our minds into good working order, and the first thing we have to fight is wandering thoughts. The great battle in private prayer is overcoming this problem of our idle and wandering thinking. We have to learn to discipline our minds and concentrate on willful, deliberate prayer.

We must have a specially selected place for prayer, but once we get there this plague of wandering thoughts begins, as we begin to think to ourselves, “This needs to be done, and I have to do that today.” Jesus says to “shut your door.” Having a secret stillness before God means deliberately shutting the door on our emotions and remembering Him. God is in secret, and He sees us from “the secret place”— He does not see us as other people do, or as we see ourselves. When we truly live in “the secret place,” it becomes impossible for us to doubt God. We become more sure of Him than of anyone or anything else. Enter into “the secret place,” and you will find that God was right in the middle of your everyday circumstances all the time. Get into the habit of dealing with God about everything.

Unless you learn to open the door of your life completely and let God in from your first waking moment of each new day, you will be working on the wrong level throughout the day.But if you will swing the door of your life fully open and “pray to your Father who is in the secret place,” every public thing in your life will be marked with the lasting imprint of the presence of God.

Journal Entry for Today-JDV

I woke up and began to pray but then my mind started to wander, as I thought about the day, my responsibilities…my list of things that must get done……or what?

And there I was again, off in my own worries and anxieties. How could I begin with such great intentions and then in the blink of an eye be off in my own directions?

And God says….”  Do not worry yourself about your wandering mind and thoughts when you come to pray….you are free to wander and to be shaped by me. Let Me shape and direct your heart and mind….be free in the Spirit…you are not to control what is mine. Give your heart and mind to Me every morning.

Even the Apostle Paul found himself in this dilemma. Remember, when you seek Me you will find Me, if you knock I will answer. Put away your thoughts of the future and of what you should or should not do and just seek Me. Nothing can separate you from My grace, mercy, love, or my presence. Seek Me and find My rest and peace. I did not set you free so you could bind yourself up. Be free and at peace in my grace.

Remember the magnitude of My sacrifice and know it was and is for you. Relax, and rest knowing that My love, mercy and grace covers you regardless. You are mine.

DJR Journal 8-23-10

Good Morning, Lord   …  Today my brother & I are bringing you this issue of the wandering mind … anytime but especially when we go to prayer.    I started praying and in just a few minutes was wandering.

Did you do the worship that you prayed about doing?

Oops.   I forgot that.   Please help me remember………….. Wow the phone rang with an “emergency” and I was off on the roller coaster .    But I’m back.   I’m finding that YouTube with the worship songs with the lyrics is a good resource for a wandering mind like mine.    From recent days and sensing right now, I am seeing more about forgiveness.   The only way that I need continual forgiveness is if I am continually imperfect.    So that works good because I am continually that and you continually offer forgiveness.    So beating myself up for not being perfect seems to be counterproductive at the very least.      But what about that “Be ye perfect?”

You know that means complete.

Yes, I knew that.   So how does that relate to this?

It is about the process.   You talk about letting me lead and you like Carrie Underwood singing about taking the wheel,   So just do that.   Put some habits into your life that put me in the drivers seat like those YouTube songs and then just let me lead..   you will fail and I will forgive.   That’s the way it is.   You need forgiveness and I have it right here for you.

OK Thanks for the reminder.

. . . and I will give you rest —Matthew 11:28

Whenever anything begins to disintegrate your life with Jesus Christ, turn to Him at once, asking Him to re-establish your rest. Never allow anything to remain in your life that is causing the unrest. Think of every detail of your life that is causing the disintegration as something to fight against, not as something you should allow to remain. Ask the Lord to put awareness of Himself in you, and your self-awareness will disappear. Then He will be your all in all. Beware of allowing your self-awareness to continue, because slowly but surely it will awaken self-pity, and self-pity is satanic. Don’t allow yourself to say, “Well, they have just misunderstood me, and this is something over which they should be apologizing to me; I’m sure I must have this cleared up with them already.” Learn to leave others alone regarding this. Simply ask the Lord to give you Christ-awareness, and He will steady you until your completeness in Him is absolute.

A complete life is the life of a child. When I am fully conscious of my awareness of Christ, there is something wrong. It is the sick person who really knows what health is. A child of God is not aware of the will of God because he is the will of God. When we have deviated even slightly from the will of God, we begin to ask, “Lord, what is your will?” A child of God never prays to be made aware of the fact that God answers prayer, because he is so restfully certain that God always answers prayer.

If we try to overcome our self-awareness through any of our own commonsense methods, we will only serve to strengthen our self-awareness tremendously. Jesus says, “Come to Me . . . and I will give you rest,” that is, Christ-awareness will take the place of self-awareness. Wherever Jesus comes He establishes rest— the rest of the completion of activity in our lives that is never aware of itself.

I have often wondered if something was wrong when I would feel as light as a feather, without the weight of my worries and cares. Surely I must be irresponsible if I feel so free? Or perhaps this is what Jesus meant by coming to Him as a little child.

And God says….”When you are truly connected to me it feels natural. You do not have “to do” anything. Simply rest in Me. When you give your life to me, and ask Me to be the Lord of your life, then simply let Me be Lord of your life, and enjoy your life. Let Me navigate the storms and trials and be at peace.

The greatest testimony you can deliver is a life lived in peace when surrounded by storms. Live in My peace and be at rest, let the Spirit flow through you and experience the joy and peace of a little child.

DJR Journal 8 20 2010

Thank you Lord, for another nudge of direction.   Just yesterday I agreed to teach at Fresno City College.  It was 5 hours so I had time to put in some encouragement and career counseling.   I got the same ovation and feedback that I always get but I only do it every several months.   So I think I’m hearing to do this more often.   Market myself and get in the classroom and various platforms.  ????

I have given you place and a voice.  You gave me some credit today, and you can do so even more.  This will happen as you develop your connection and comfort level.    That’s how I want my sons and daughters, comfortable in their skin and comfortable giving me place in their lives.  Resting in me, knowing that they will get just get closer and closer until they are here full time with me.  And that stumbles are merely stumbles, they get back up and keep on coming.

Lord, I want to ask you a question.   Sometimes I worry that I am charging off in a direction that I could power on my own, without you being anywhere around.   This Green stuff that I teach in the public sphere,  lot’s of guy’s teach similar with no acknowledgement that you even exist.   How do I know I’m in your will and not running my own game?

I appreciate your concern that I get my message out.   But know this, I am fully capable of getting seen and heard.   And I can certainly steer your boat with the blessing and peace meters as we’ve talked about before.   Dont fool yourself, the combination of skills and gifts and experience that I’ve put together in you is unique and I dont want you to squander it.   I have spent a long time developing the platform that you now stand in.   Go with the meters that I have developed for you and dont look back.  I’ll take you aside when it’s time to evaluate and re-direct.  I am in the energizing that you feel so go with it and let me lead in the development.

OK I’ll go with that.

Self-Awareness

August 19, 2010
Come to Me . . . —Matthew 11:28

God intends for us to live a well-rounded life in Christ Jesus, but there are times when that life is attacked from the outside. Then we tend to fall back into self-examination, a habit that we thought was gone. Self-awareness is the first thing that will upset the completeness of our life in God, and self-awareness continually produces a sense of struggling and turmoil in our lives. Self-awareness is not sin, and it can be produced by nervous emotions or by suddenly being dropped into a totally new set of circumstances. Yet it is never God’s will that we should be anything less than absolutely complete in Him. Anything that disturbs our rest in Him must be rectified at once, and it is not rectified by being ignored but only by coming to Jesus Christ. If we will come to Him, asking Him to produce Christ-awareness in us, He will always do it, until we fully learn to abide in Him.

Never allow anything that divides or destroys the oneness of your life with Christ to remain in your life without facing it. Beware of allowing the influence of your friends or your circumstances to divide your life. This only serves to sap your strength and slow your spiritual growth. Beware of anything that can split your oneness with Him, causing you to see yourself as separate from Him. Nothing is as important as staying right spiritually. And the only solution is a very simple one— “Come to Me . . . .” The intellectual, moral, and spiritual depth of our reality as a person is tested and measured by these words. Yet in every detail of our lives where we are found not to be real, we would rather dispute the findings than come to Jesus.

Journal Entry for Today-JDV

I am beginning to understand that I can find peace and joy, faith and love and a very positive attitude while surrounded by a storm; if I stay connected and praise God for His answers, and agree to receive them even before I even understand what they might be. And I pray that God change my vision and hopes and dreams to those that He has for me.

And God says….”This is indeed the way to live the abundant life on earth where trials and troubles are a matter of course; seek first the Kingdome of God and all these things shall be added to you. Peace, joy, faith and love from knowing that I have you and your future in the palm of my hand.”

“When you let go of your life and allow Jesus to live through you, all things are possible; peace, joy and love become a matter of course…….even in the trials and trouble of this life.”

Have You Ever Been Speechless with Sorrow? 8-17-2010

Have You Ever Been Speechless with Sorrow?

August 18, 2010
When he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich —Luke 18:23

The rich young ruler went away from Jesus speechless with sorrow, having nothing to say in response to Jesus’ words. He had no doubt about what Jesus had said or what it meant, and it produced in him a sorrow with no words with which to respond. Have you ever been there? Has God’s Word ever come to you, pointing out an area of your life, requiring you to yield it to Him? Maybe He has pointed out certain personal qualities, desires, and interests, or possibly relationships of your heart and mind. If so, then you have often been speechless with sorrow. The Lord will not go after you, and He will not plead with you. But every time He meets you at the place where He has pointed, He will simply repeat His words, saying, “If you really mean what you say, these are the conditions.”

“Sell all that you have . . .” ( Luke 18:22 ). In other words, rid yourself before God of everything that might be considered a possession until you are a mere conscious human being standing before Him, and then give God that. That is where the battle is truly fought— in the realm of your will before God. Are you more devoted to your idea of what Jesus wants than to Jesus Himself? If so, you are likely to hear one of His harsh and unyielding statements that will produce sorrow in you. What Jesus says is difficult— it is only easy when it is heard by those who have His nature in them. Beware of allowing anything to soften the hard words of Jesus Christ.

I can be so rich in my own poverty, or in the awareness of the fact that I am nobody, that I will never be a disciple of Jesus. Or I can be so rich in the awareness that I am somebody that I will never be a disciple. Am I willing to be destitute and poor even in my sense of awareness of my destitution and poverty? If not, that is why I become discouraged. Discouragement is disillusioned self-love, and self-love may be love for my devotion to Jesus— not love for Jesus Himself.

August 18, 2010

And so I wondered if I would ever “get it” and truly measure up?

And God said………..”No, you can never measure up, not in this life. That is why the sacrifice for you was so great. But you can allow Jesus to live through you, and always measure up. My grace and mercy follows you and covers you because of Jesus. Whenever you feel less than is expected or you fall and feel as if you cannot measure up…..remember Jesus always covers you, and He always measures up.

As you go through your day, stay connected to Jesus and look to Him for not only the spiritual strength to carry you, but look to Him for the wisdom, knowledge, energy and discipline to carry you through your work and relationships.”

He came so you could have life and life more abundantly. Have it, receive it in Jesus.”

Are You Discouraged or Devoted? 8-17-2010

Are You Discouraged or Devoted?

August 17,2010
. . . Jesus . . . said to him, ’You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have . . . and come, follow Me.’ But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich —Luke 18:22-23

Have you ever heard the Master say something very difficult to you? If you haven’t, I question whether you have ever heard Him say anything at all.Jesus says a tremendous amount to us that we listen to, but do not actually hear. And once we do hear Him, His words are harsh and unyielding.

Jesus did not show the least concern that this rich young ruler should do what He told him, nor did Jesus make any attempt to keep this man with Him. He simply said to him, “Sell all that you have . . . and come, follow Me.” Our Lord never pleaded with him; He never tried to lure him— He simply spoke the strictest words that human ears have ever heard, and then left him alone.

Have I ever heard Jesus say something difficult and unyielding to me? Has He said something personally to me to which I have deliberately listened— not something I can explain for the sake of others, but something I have heard Him say directly to me? This man understood what Jesus said. He heard it clearly, realizing the full impact of its meaning, and it broke his heart. He did not go away as a defiant person, but as one who was sorrowful and discouraged. He had come to Jesus on fire with zeal and determination, but the words of Jesus simply froze him. Instead of producing enthusiastic devotion to Jesus, they produced heartbreaking discouragement. And Jesus did not go after him, but let him go. Our Lord knows perfectly well that once His word is truly heard, it will bear fruit sooner or later. What is so terrible is that some of us prevent His words from bearing fruit in our present life.I wonder what we will say when we finally make up our minds to be devoted to Him on that particular point? One thing is certain— He will never throw our past failures back in our faces.

Journal Entry for Today-JDV

August 17, 2010

I think I understand a bit more about taking life and trusting God one day at a time. It just occurred to me that I may only have the capacity for enough faith to carry me one day at a time.

And God says…”I carry you with My love every day. I give you the faith and hope and courage in the form of the Holy Spirit, to live one day at a time. You find the love, faith, hope, trust, courage and connection in prayer, the word and fellowship. And I give you the capacity to capture these daily strengths one day at a time. Like manna from heaven you cannot store them up. Begin to pray without ceasing every morning; seek Me in the word and in fellowship and look for me in everything and every place of your day.

Knock and the doors will open, ask and you shall receive. You will receive all you need, one day at a time.

DJR Journal

Good morning Lord,   Thanks for the reminder today that we chose our name because Manna only lasts one day and we’ll need another daily dose tomorrow.   As JD said, we “might as well use up the fuel for today cause it ain’t going to keep”    I see that you  spoke to people matter of factly about their sin and their needs as to the rich young ruler.  Kind of like, here’s the deal,  it is what it is, take it or leave it, but it is what it is.   You didn’t beg people nor did you scream at them to stop.   (except maybe a few religeous leaders)   So thank you for that and your longsuffering and patience with me.   I have a question.  What if I didn’t obey on  a nudge from a long time ago and it’s not possible to go back and do it now?  Sometimes I think that.  But then I think that the adversary is at least happy if I’m all wound up in a guilt trip…..

You are right.  Dont let him win.   There is no condemnation.  And it is good to live like there is only today.   It is what it is and you get to choose to make the best of the situation.   Grieving over spilt milk will not bring the milk back and it damages MY reputation , (as well as yours) So get up, dry your eyes and choose.   Choose you this day….   Joshua

When I have sadly misunderstood Him? 8-16-2010

When I have sadly misunderstood Him? August 16, 2010
He calls his own . . . by name . . . —John 10:3

It is possible to know all about doctrine and still not know Jesus. A person’s soul is in grave danger when the knowledge of doctrine surpasses Jesus, avoiding intimate touch with Him. Why was Mary weeping? Doctrine meant no more to her than the grass under her feet. In fact, any Pharisee could have made a fool of Mary doctrinally, but one thing they could never ridicule was the fact that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her (see Luke 8:2 ); yet His blessings were nothing to her in comparison with knowing Jesus Himself. “. . . she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. . . . Jesus said to her, ’Mary!’ ” ( John 20:14, 16 ). Once He called Mary by her name, she immediately knew that she had a personal history with the One who spoke. “She turned and said to Him, ’Rabboni!’ ” ( John 20:16 ).

When I have stubbornly doubted? (see John 20:24-29 ). Have I been doubting something about Jesus— maybe an experience to which others testify, but which I have not yet experienced? The other disciples said to Thomas, “We have seen the Lord” ( John 20:25 ). But Thomas doubted, saying, “Unless I see . . . I will not believe” ( John 20:25 ). Thomas needed the personal touch of Jesus. When His touches will come we never know, but when they do come they are indescribably precious. “Thomas . . . said to Him, ’My Lord and my God!’ ” ( John 20:28 ).

When I have selfishly denied Him? (see John 21:15-17 ). Peter denied Jesus Christ with oaths and curses (see Matthew 26:69-75 ), and yet after His resurrection Jesus appeared to Peter alone. Jesus restored Peter in private, and then He restored him publicly before the others. And Peter said to Him, “Lord . . . You know that I love You” ( John 21:17 ).

Do I have a personal history with Jesus Christ? The one true sign of discipleship is intimate oneness with Him— a knowledge of Jesus that nothing can shake.

A book by Joyce Meyer, a song, a new lesson, and then I “get it”. I was praying for answers I already had. Somewhere, somehow I moved from “receiving” blessings from God to trying to “get” blessings from God. There is a difference.

And God says…”I bless you and give you blessings not because of anything you do or do not do. I bless you not because you are holy or righteous. I bless you because I love you. My love transcends anything you could ever accomplish. It was all accomplished on the cross by Jesus.”

“Instead of “begging” or repeatedly requesting an answer to your prayers, or a change in your circumstances, simply thank me for my blessings and receive them. Know that I will answer your prayers and meet your needs; I have already promised this. And your unworthiness, and or your disobedience? You are covered in the righteousness of Jesus and as a result of Jesus, all your unworthiness, shame and perhaps even pride, are covered with My grace and mercy. “

“Come to Me just as you are knowing you are acceptable in Jesus, and I will meet all your needs according to My riches in glory. Simply receive my love and blessings.”

DJR Journal  …  Thank your lord for the good times we’ve had with friends lately, saying good bye and wrapping up this chapter of our lives that are decades long with lots of people.   You have blessed us indeed.   Please lead us to finish well here in our home of the last 50-60 years.  And guide us in the new Journey-Adventure.  I would like to know more about what this move is about, since I sense it is more than just following grandbabies….

It is more. It is about US.   You have been in a rut, albeit an expansive one, still the length of time in one place has restricted your vision.   There is a time for everything,  consistency, structure, persistance.   You have been there and done that.   It is a new time.  A time for you to step out and trust me.   It will be an adventure,  I have new and different things for you that you know not and have only begun to think about some of them.   You must stay open and stay connected to me or you will miss some of the best that I have planned for you.    Come up here with me. Stay with me.  Look down from here and you will see what breaks my heart.  Let it break yours too and you will be ready for what I have for you.

Chastening of the Lord 8-14-2010

Chastening of the Lord August 14, 2010
My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him —Hebrews 12:5

It is very easy to grieve the Spirit of God; we do it by despising the discipline of the Lord, or by becoming discouraged when He rebukes us. If our experience of being set apart from sin and being made holy through the process of sanctification is still very shallow, we tend to mistake the reality of God for something else. And when the Spirit of God gives us a sense of warning or restraint, we are apt to say mistakenly, “Oh, that must be from the devil.”

“Do not quench the Spirit” ( 1 Thessalonians 5:19 ), and do not despise Him when He says to you, in effect, “Don’t be blind on this point anymore— you are not as far along spiritually as you thought you were. Until now I have not been able to reveal this to you, but I’m revealing it to you right now.” When the Lord disciplines you like that, let Him have His way with you. Allow Him to put you into a right-standing relationship before God.

“. . . nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him.” We begin to pout, become irritated with God, and then say, “Oh well, I can’t help it. I prayed and things didn’t turn out right anyway. So I’m simply going to give up on everything.” Just think what would happen if we acted like this in any other area of our lives!

Am I fully prepared to allow God to grip me by His power and do a work in me that is truly worthy of Himself? Sanctification is not my idea of what I want God to do for me— sanctification is God’s idea of what He wants to do for me. But He has to get me into the state of mind and spirit where I will allow Him to sanctify me completely, whatever the cost (see 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 ).

Journal Entry for Today-August 14, 2010

August 15, 2010

I sometimes feel like the actor in the movie, Fireproof, waiting on the Lord. Waiting for a response to my hopes and prayers, I know I am growing but sometimes I feel discomforted wondering when God will respond, or even IF He will respond. I know that His answers are yes, no and later and only He can see the best outcome. I want to be patient and wait, but sometimes it feels like all the circumstances are closing in around me……

And God says…”Waiting in this life is a very important part of obedience. When you wait upon the Lord you are being faithful to my direction. I will strengthen you when you wait, I will give you the power and courage to wait, and I will give you peace and joy inside the waiting. Do not try and get out of your trials too early; let your patience have time to do the work in you. Look back over your life, have I ever let you down? It may not have turned out the way you planned, but your circumstances did not overwhelm you.

Take heart, and remember I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Do Not Quench the Spirit 8-13-2010

Do Not Quench the Spirit- August 13, 2010
Do not quench the Spirit —1 Thessalonians 5:19

The voice of the Spirit of God is as gentle as a summer breeze— so gentle that unless you are living in complete fellowship and oneness with God, you will never hear it. The sense of warning and restraint that the Spirit gives comes to us in the most amazingly gentle ways. And if you are not sensitive enough to detect His voice, you will quench it, and your spiritual life will be impaired. This sense of restraint will always come as a “still small voice” ( 1 Kings 19:12 ), so faint that no one except a saint of God will notice it.

Beware if in sharing your personal testimony you continually have to look back, saying, “Once, a number of years ago, I was saved.” If you have put your “hand to the plow” and are walking in the light, there is no “looking back”— the past is instilled into the present wonder of fellowship and oneness with God ( Luke 9:62 ; also see 1 John 1:6-7 ). If you get out of the light, you become a sentimental Christian, and live only on your memories, and your testimony will have a hard metallic ring to it. Beware of trying to cover up your present refusal to “walk in the light” by recalling your past experiences when you did “walk in the light” ( 1 John 1:7 ). When-ever the Spirit gives you that sense of restraint, call a halt and make things right, or else you will go on quenching and grieving Him without even knowing it.

Suppose God brings you to a crisis and you almost endure it, but not completely. He will engineer the crisis again, but this time some of the intensity will be lost. You will have less discernment and more humiliation at having disobeyed. If you continue to grieve His Spirit, there will come a time when that crisis cannot be repeated, because you have totally quenched Him. But if you will go on through the crisis, your life will become a hymn of praise to God. Never become attached to anything that continues to hurt God. For you to be free of it, God must be allowed to hurt whatever it may be.

August 13, 2010

Yesterday I wrote about facing a crisis and I was not peeking or looking ahead to this devotional by Oswald Chambers…..Probably not a coincidence….

I once wrote that we “get” to go through crisis and trials in this life. We are blessed when we understand that we are not to try and “get out of them” too early, or use our own skills and talents to short circuit the learning and growing. (acknowledge the Lord in all your ways and do not rely on your own understanding (or devices) and He will make your paths straight). I understand all that, but I still seem to want early,  safe and secure answers.

And God says…..”You already know the early, safe and secure answer and it is Jesus. Time after time you return right to Him and find peace and joy in this life.  The issue is not with you wanting out of your trial too early, because you can escape the fear, worry and pain very early in the process. The trial or crisis may remain, but you will notice that you have peace and joy inside of it. Reach out for Jesus

DJR Journal & Prayer

Good morning Lord,  once again I feel like I  am missing it.   Now at least the target that I am missing is a more accurate target than as a young Christian, where I was tempted to consider how well I measured up to a list of do’s and dont’s as the target to always fall short of.    You have been bringing JD & I to the point where we see target to be simple staying connected with you and getting all our direction from that connection.    I’ve found myself still beating myself up for falling short though.  So please help me find the place of rest that comes from connection and obedience.

You are being a Martha, busy about many things.   Slow down, simplify, reduce the static and competing voices in what you hear and focus on quality of our relationship.

OK good word, It rings with me.   I’m glad you sent Leo and Mary into my life with the simplification message as well.

Remember, they borrowed the good part from me.

Yes of course.  So please help me in this.   I dont want to be a mile wide and an inch deep in our relationship.  I want the opposite of that and many things need to fall away.    I’m ready to say good bye to whatever cant continue.   Help me choose the best stuff to keep  in my life…. Like Mary did.

The Theology of Resting in God

Why are you fearful, O you of little faith? —Matthew 8:26

When we are afraid, the least we can do is pray to God. But our Lord has a right to expect that those who name His name have an underlying confidence in Him. God expects His children to be so confident in Him that in any crisis they are the ones who are reliable. Yet our trust is only in God up to a certain point, then we turn back to the elementary panic-stricken prayers of those people who do not even know God. We come to our wits’ end, showing that we don’t have even the slightest amount of confidence in Him or in His sovereign control of the world. To us He seems to be asleep, and we can see nothing but giant, breaking waves on the sea ahead of us.

“. . . O you of little faith!” What a stinging pain must have shot through the disciples as they surely thought to themselves, “We missed the mark again!” And what a sharp pain will go through us when we suddenly realize that we could have produced complete and utter joy in the heart of Jesus by remaining absolutely confident in Him, in spite of what we were facing.

There are times when there is no storm or crisis in our lives, and we do all that is humanly possible. But it is when a crisis arises that we instantly reveal upon whom we rely. If we have been learning to worship God and to place our trust in Him, the crisis will reveal that we can go to the point of breaking, yet without breaking our confidence in Him.

We have been talking quite a lot about sanctification, but what will be the result in our lives? It will be expressed in our lives as a peaceful resting in God, which means a total oneness with Him. And this oneness will make us not only blameless in His sight, but also a profound joy to Him.

Journal Entry for Today-JDV

August 12, 2010

I am facing some  trials and as a matter of course, I find myself counting my blessings, and recalling all the times that God has met me right at the point and time of my need. I can recall time after time when He was right there exactly when I needed Him, not a minute early, nor a minute late, He has always been right on time.

I can also recall my prayers becoming more and more intense as the crisis seemed to grow with time and pending events. And He was always there…..never early, but right on time.

And God says……”You see difficult circumstances as trials and tests while I see your trials as opportunities for you to bring Me glory. Your natural inclination is to want to avoid pain and seek peace in pleasant times absent worry and strife. You believe in the plans and preparations you have made for this life and you trust that your plans and preparations will provide for you. If that were true, then you would receive the glory. Many look to live in this fashion.

But My children trust in Me in all things…..”Trust in the Lord in all your ways and do not relay on your own devices and I will make your paths straight”. They seek Me first and trust me to lead them into peace regardless of circumstances. You will experience trials and storms you cannot prepare for, that is the way of this life, and  I came to give you life and life more abundantly,

Stay connected to Me and find the joy and peace of abundant living regardless of your circumstances…AND know that I will always meet you at the point of your needs and at the precise and perfect moment of my choosing. I am the God I am.
